Why I ride the ACS Bike a Thon

This year will mark my 25th year riding in the American Cancer Society's Bike-A-Thon (BAT).

I started riding because of my uncle Danny and in 2023 and recently I lost my beloved mother to cancer. I will continue my efforts to raise money year after year in loving memory of her and so many others who have lost the fight.

What started as a fun way to stay fit and honor my lost relatives (the ride) has turned into a mission (the fundraising) to stop the pain I and countless others feel, and for the many others who are affected by this horrible disease.

When I started, I did not know the importance of fundraising. I just rode for myself, and my family was there. It wasn't until I was asked to join the BAT committee that I started to see what the American Cancer Society (ACS) does and how it helps my local Community. I learned more about what the money raised through the Bike-A-Thon supports. I started supporting bike rides that raised money and helped fellow riders get in shape for the Bike a Thon.

I will be holding my Hilly Philly ride and fundraiser on August 1st 2026 . Follow my Facebook page for more information. https://www.facebook.com/gbjr1978
Hilly Philly is a bike ride that I organize to raise money for ACS, and it falls on the first Saturday of August every year. This event is a 25-mile bike ride with 2500 feet of vertical elevation (Hills). If any member would like to attend but not ride, we have an amazing after-party with food and beverages with a kick-ass raffle. All funds raised go directly to the ACS. Most food and drink are donated or paid for by me or my family.

I am a proponent of research and preventative actions to stop cancer. But I also understand that we need to care for those with it. I believe that the American Cancer Society promotes and supports both lines of offense and defense when it comes to saving lives. They are funding researchers and providing services alike to patients undergoing treatment. To be honest their cancer helpline is the only 24hr staffed phone number anyone can call to talk to a real person 1.800.227.2345.

One of my favorite stories is of an older woman who called the line just to talk about making cookies for her caretakers. The moral of that story is that chocolate chip cookies make everything better.

If you need help with any questions or support with cancer that number again is 1.800.227.2345
Through my efforts and the efforts of many others, we provide funds to help people stay well and get well, those funds go to help the ones who are finding cures.

Thank you,
