Description

MSIA Cold is Cool allows Fourth and Fifth Graders to Ski Free in Michigan! The Michigan Snowsports Industries Association (MSIA) wants to give Michigan kids an opportunity to get out, have fun and get healthy this winter. This is why MSIA has established Cold is Cool, a state-wide program that provides every 4th and 5th grader the opportunity to ski for free. Students can obtain a Cold is Cool Ski & Ride Passport that gives them up to three free lift tickets or trail passes at 30 participating ski areas, plus additional discounts on the slopes and in Michigan ski shops. MSIA charges $20 for the passport (to cover printing and shipping.)

In addition to the lift tickets donated by the participating ski areas, Cold is Cool Passport also includes a coupon for 20% off a helmet purchase and $20 off the purchase of $100 at participating ski shops across the state. Some ski areas have also included coupons for equipment rental and free or discounted lessons.

School Ski Days

As part of MSIA's Cold is Cool program for kids we also offer school field trips.

According to the Let’s Move campaign, kids need at least 60 minutes of active and vigorous play each day to stay healthy. Michigan Snowsports Industries Association invites all schools to take a field trip to their nearby ski area for a special experiential learning program and lots of fun outside this winter. A field trip is best suited for kids seven years of age and older.

The School Ski Days field trip program includes:

A tour of the ski facility.
An explanation, prior to skiing, of the Skier’s Responsibility Code and safe skiing techniques.
The use of rental equipment (if needed).
A ski or snowboard lesson. Children will be divided by ability.
Information on the science of making snow.
Free time on the slopes to practice skiing and have fun!

The participating ski areas have agreed to provide the School Ski Days program as inexpensively as possible. The objective is to introduce children to skiing and snowboarding and to get them outside, enjoying Michigan’s winter in a fun, safe environment. The cost varies from ski area to ski area but will not exceed $35 per child. Some ski areas charge less. Transportation is not included. If there are children with special needs, we will do our best to accommodate all children.
