Striving for the Finish Line

Author Russell Koop began his journey in triathlon in 1999, with an Olympic distance race.  Since then, he has participated in approximately seventy-five races and completed eight marathons, four half-marathons, and dozens of 10ks an 5ks.  This is his first book about the triathlon experience...

Curt is the kind of amateur athlete who plays it safe on the baseball field. Unfortunately, that attitude isn’t enough to prevent a sidelining injury. Sarah is a college swimmer who is contemplating what to do with her life after graduation. Matt is a physical therapist who trains for cycle races in his spare time. Angie is a busy wife and mother who has just learned her husband has been having an affair. Even though these four couldn’t be any more different, they are about to have more in common than they think.

As Curt, Sarah, Matt, and Angie are exposed to the world of triathlons in varied ways, they each decide to train for and compete in their first race, soon immersing themselves in a competitive environment where only the fittest—both mentally and physically—survive. As the years pass and races accumulate, they all reach a crossroads where they contemplate whether there is more. Although they have their own reasons for doing so, all four decide to attempt the Ironman triathlon and prove once and for all whether they have what it takes to achieve the ultimate goal.

In this tale of courage, perseverance, and raw determination, four triathletes are led on a journey through the world of competitive races to eventually try to complete the Ironman triathlon.   [get your copy here]

MAAPP

The U.S. Center for SafeSport created the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP), a collection of proactive prevention and training policies for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement to help create a safer and healthier environment in which minor athletes can thrive.

Required Prevention Policies

The MAAPP focuses on in-program contact between an Adult Event Participant and a minor athlete and covers the following Required Prevention Policies: Meetings, Individual training sessions, Therapeutic and Recovery Modalities and Manual Therapy, Locker Rooms and changing areas, Electronic communications, Transportation.

All Required Prevention Policies apply at all facilities or locations that are partially or fully under the jurisdiction of USAT which include any sanctioned event by USA Triathlon, or any facility that the USAT owns, leases, or rents for practice, training, or competition.

All Required Prevention Policies must be followed by Adult Event Participants who have regular contact and/or authority over minor athletes.

Mandatory Reporting

As a reminder, all Adult Event Participants – including those with one-day memberships – are Mandatory Reporters. If you see or hear a report of any form of abuse, whether it is sexual, physical, mental or another type of abuse you are required to report that abuse within a 24-hour period. You can file a report to the U.S. Center for SafeSport through its online reporting form or by calling the U.S. Center for SafeSport at 833-587-7233 or USA Triathlon at trisafe@usatriathlon.org.
