The complexities of insurance create many inherent barriers to access, which are exacerbated when trying to obtain coverage for autism and behavioral health treatments. Since 2011, the Insurance Resource Center (IRC) for Autism and Behavioral Health at UMass Chan Medical School’s E.K. Shriver Center has been a trusted lifeline for families navigating these complexities. We provide a range of support with issues such as locating providers, affording co-payments, appealing denials, documenting medical necessity, renewing coverage, etc. Any one of these can preclude access, collectively it can be overwhelming. Our Center helps families, at no charge, with whatever level of support they require.

We support individuals, families, and providers navigating the complex process of accessing autism and behavioral health services through insurance—including private insurance, MassHealth, and Medicare. Our team helps people understand their coverage options and assists with everything from paperwork to advocacy.

Earlier this year, one parent shared their experience with us: "I reached out to [The IRC] after getting their information from a friend. I was feeling so defeated trying to get help with MassHealth coverage for my daughter with autism. I had employees tell me she wasn't 'autistic enough' to qualify. [The IRC] listened to everything I had been through and explained clearly how I could get her MassHealth as secondary insurance, along with premium assistance. They helped with the paperwork and outreach—I couldn’t be more grateful."

We’re excited to be part of the Flutie 5K again this year! The funds we raise help us continue this important work for the many families who reach out to us every day. The Flutie 5K gives us a special chance to connect and re-connect with the families and organizations we've supported over the years. It's a wonderful community event we look forward to every year.
