Description

Update SATURDAY, JANUARY, 13.

Great race on Saturday! Results for the 2024 Frosty Freestyle are here: https://rftiming.racetecresults.com/results.aspx?CId=16365&RId=624

Sunday, the course will open for skiing at 9:00am. Race starts promptly at 10:00am. We expect the course to be the same, but if could be different than Saturday's: given the cold, wind, and shift in wind direction from the west to the north, we may see if we can get more of the trail in the woods or the wind blocked by the woods.

Registration

ONLINE REGISTRATION ONLY! NO - repeat - NO DAY OF RACE or ON-SITE REGISTRATION! Registration ends 1:00pm the day before the race. If you are doing two days of racing, registration ends the day before the first race at 1:00pm. If you miss the registration end, you'll miss your Michigan Cup points!

All proceeds from the race are donated to Huron Meadows to help fund ski instructors, cross country ski trail development, snow making, and rental equipment. We’re all volunteers who simply want to see everyone get out and enjoy the winter!

Frosty Freestyle and Krazy Klassic Update Tuesday, January 9th.

We continue to monitor the weather and make contingency plans accordingly. Here is the latest.

The current forecast does not predict temperatures between now and the race on Saturday to allow significant new snow to be made. If both races were held without any additional snowfall, it would likely be on a roughly 1 kilometer loop in the woods on Buck’s Run. Racers would have to walk to the start, and the start format might be adjusted to reduce course congestion.

However, all major forecasts are now calling for significant snow beginning Friday afternoon/evening of anywhere from 6-11 inches. We are still looking at several scenarios based upon if, when, and how much snow we get on Friday.

With the predicted snow, there are also strong winds predicted which may reduce accumulation on the golf course. However, chief of course Adam has already outlined a race route through the woods which incorporates parts of Bucks’ Run, and part of the loop along Rickett Road. This section is well sheltered from wind and holds snow extremely well. He would be able to create a nice several kilometer long loop which could include a connecter to the clubhouse if there is enough snow. If the golf course is suitable, we could also use it.

Given the storm’s timing, we will not know any firm details of the course until the evening before, or morning of the race. However, we are fairly confident that if there is a significant winter storm it is likely that the race will start later than scheduled— perhaps by several hours— to allow for grooming and extra travel time.  If that is the case, we will post updates on NSR.com, the race website, and emails to registered racers.

We realize this provides a great amount of uncertainty, but we want to be able to provide a safe event and take advantage of the natural snow. The bottom line is that we are working with what we know and following the trend lines.

We will know more tomorrow morning after there has been a chance to see the effects of today’s warm temperatures.

It should be much easier to know what the conditions will be for Sunday’s race by the end of Saturday’s race.

SNOWMAKING!

Worried about snow? Huron Meadows Metropark's three snow guns pretty much guarantee snow coverage over the 2.5km-long Buck’s Run Trail. If Mother Nature doesn't deliver the real stuff, we'll race laps on Buck’s Run. If we have lots of natural snow, the Frosty Freestyle and Krazy Klassic will run on the normal ski trails at Huron Meadows.
